Learning Objectives

  • Design of structures in seismic zone – Part A

    The course is divided in two modules (A and B). As a partial difference from what previously communicated, professor Ghersi will give the module A, while the professor Neri the module B, with the exception described below.
    This course aims at giving the theoretical knowledge and the practical capability for the structural design of buildings in seismic zone.

Detailed Course Content

  • Design of structures in seismic zone – Part A

    Design of r.c. framed buildings in seismic zone
    Organization of the structure. Estimate of seismic action and internal actions on structure. Sizing of structural elements. Model of structure. Basic and combined load conditions. Critical discussion of results of numerical analysis. Design of reinforcement, according to capacity design criterion.
    Particular aspects, as the influence of non-structural elements on the global behaviour of the structure.

    Design of r.c. buildings with shear walls in seismic zone
    R.c. walls located only in the lower storey of the building and their influence on the seismic behaviour of the upper part of the building.
    R.c. buildings in which the resistance to seismic action is provided by shear walls.

    Design of steel structures – Part 1 (Prof. Neri – 15 h)
    Design of steel structural members.
    The purpose of this course is to provide basic principles and structural detailing of multi-storey and single storey buildings. Brief information about structural analysis, load, design codes and structural stability is also given. The course gives some example of simple structures.

    Design of steel structures – Part 2 (Prof. Ghersi -15 h)
    Design of steel connections.
    Bolted connections. Welded connections. Classification of connections basing on stiffness and strength. Examples of common types of connections.

    Design of steel structural in seismic areas
    The purpose of this modulus is to provide principles and structural detailing of multi-storey buildings in seismic areas.
    It will be focused on particular seismic resistant structures: Moment Resisting Frame MRF and concentric CBF and eccentric EBF frames.

    Design of structures in seismic areas protected by isolation o dissipations systems
    The purpose of this modulus is to provide principles and structural detailing about innovative seismic protection system with particular attentions on base isolation and dissipative systems.
