Learning Objectives

The course aims to provide the basic knowledge of non-destructive tests to be carried out on mechanical devices or individual parts of them in the construction or operating phase. The presence of discontinuities and defects generated during the foundry, casting, welding processes or during the useful life of the mechanical elements will be analyzed. The student engineer will be instructed on the most significant aspects of non-destructive testing methods ranging from visual inspection to the most refined radioscopic methods. The course also includes laboratory exercises with examples of the use of some of the most common methods.


Course Structure

The first part of the course provides an introduction on the defects generated during the processing techniques in the furnace, casting, cold or hot plastic processing of metal elements. Defects produced during the application of various welding methods, during mechanical processing or during the working life of mechanical elements will also be analyzed. Subsequently, the main test methods for identifying the defects described with no-breaking the element tested will be analyzed. During the course, classroom or laboratory exercises will be carried out.


Detailed Course Content

Description of the defects generated during the processing techniques in the furnace, casting, cold or hot plastic processing of metal elements. Description of defects produced during various welding methods, during mechanical processing or during the operation of mechanical elements. Analysis of the following non-destructive test methods for defect detection: Visual investigation, Penetrant liquids, Magnetoscopy, Acoustic emission, Thermography, Eddy currents, Radiography, Ultrasound and Leak detection.
