ARCHITETTURA E COMPOSIZIONE ARCHITETTONICA I E LABORATORIO ARCHITETTURA E COMPOSIZIONE ARCHITETTONICA I
Module LABORATORY OF ARCHITECTURE AND ARCHITECTURAL COMPOSITION I

Academic Year 2023/2024 - Teacher: SIMONA CALVAGNA

Expected Learning Outcomes

Intended as a moment of application of the educational activities carried out with the theoretical course of ADS 1, the design workshop aims to offer an opportunity to put into practice the basic knowledge acquired during the course by approaching the architectural project in search of the relationships between space, elements, context and materials. During the design workshop, students will have the opportunity to experiment with the rudiments of architecture and construction as well as the expressive means of viewing space, privileging the use of section drawings and models in order to acquire the tools for managing and modelling architectural space.

Course Structure

During workshop hours, the projects assigned as an exercise are developed in the classroom under the guidance of the teacher. The reviews of the work carried out are collective, in order to activate the discussion among the students. The guided work activities in the classroom are supported by communications and seminars on specific aspects of the design process. Ample space is given to experimenting with techniques of representation, control and modelling of space: from freehand drawing to technical drawing and CAD, from photomontages to maquettes, from collages to renderings.

Required Prerequisites

It is advisable to attend lectures after taking the exams in Architectural Design 2 and History of Architecture 2.

Attendance of Lessons

Class attendance is compulsory. In order to sit the final examination, it is necessary to have attended 70% (50% for working students) of the course hours.

Detailed Course Content

The workshop, in providing operational support to the course of Architecture and Architectural Composition I, punctually approaches it by conducting short design exercises and assisting during the end-of-course design exercise, tending to put into practice the issues raised in the theoretical lectures and experimenting in the field with solutions to specific design problems.
The activities are framed in a guided sequence that facilitates the practice of the design process, with its circular and iterative character, accompanying the students through the various phases, from conception to the definition of the architectural plans. The workshop in the course of the teaching sequence tends to support the design activities through guided work in the classroom understood as a continuous confrontation not only with the teacher, but among the students themselves, in the spirit of cooperative learning. The practical activity is complemented by targeted communications, seminars and on-site visits.

Learning Assessment

Learning Assessment Procedures

The examination is a single exam together with the ACA1 course and consists of the presentation of the project developed in the group and individual exercises as well as the assessment of theoretical knowledge through an interview.

Examples of frequently asked questions and / or exercises

The student is asked to briefly present, in a group, the projects developed during the course, illustrating the graphics and models produced.
