Learning Objectives

The course considers the technological requirements that serve the activities of Chemical Engineering, aims to implement knowledge of the materials used for any tough or harsh work environments and then tries to produce the best knowledge of the properties of the materials themselves that technological interventions designed to improve the ability, depending on use. Particular attention is given to the corrosion and protection of materials and radioactive sources. The teaching methodology of the course consists of lectures, tutorials, themes written at the end of the course, to be produced in both of the two most used languages in the technical field (Italian and English).

Detailed Course Content

1. STEEL INDUSTRY (HISTORY AND PRODUCTION)
Blast furnace systems: products and by-products, pig iron production, conversion
of cast iron into steel (converters, history and current technologies) productions
with ovens Siemens Marten, production of special steels weakly and strongly
bound, electric furnaces, electric arc furnaces. Casting of steel.
2. TERNS OF BALANCE OF CARBON FERRO ALLOYS.
Law of Gibbs, kinetics of transformations, heat treatment, annealing, hardening,
tempering, curves Bain, transitional structures of steel cooling, diffusion processes.
3. PROPERTY MECHANICAL AND TECHNOLOGICAL MATERIALS.
Structures of metals and lattice defects, materials subjected to fatigue, fracture
mechanics, materials are stressed in temperature regime, wear ..
4. DESIGNATION OF STEEL, OF IRON AND NON-FERROUS MATERIALS.
Unified characterization of materials (or chemical or mechanical) depending on the
field of work and their applications.
5. CORROSION AND PROTECTION OF MATERIALS.
General corrosion of wet and dry. Equation Nernest. Diagrams voltage - ph
(Pourbaix diagrams). Measurements of the kinetics of corrosion processes. Charge
transfer overvoltage or barrier, diffusion, reaction, crystallization, current limit.
Polarization curves (Stearn and Geary equation, Tafel lines).
6. RADIOACTIVE SOURCES.
Outline of radioactive materials with the panorama of disused radioactive sources
and orphan sources, highlighting the problems related to the uncontrolled disposal
and nuclear terrorism. Notes on the chemistry of nuclear installations.
7. FUNDAMENTALS OF SAFETY.
Work on the environmental impact of production in steel plants, petrochemical
works with the possible monitoring of corrosion to prevent environmental hazards
(exercises corrosion).
