Safety engineering
Academic Year 2025/2026 - Teacher: Alessandro LO FAROExpected Learning Outcomes
Construction sites are highly complex and dynamic workplaces, made up of workers with different backgrounds and skills. Accidents in construction are therefore very common. Due to the rapid increase in construction activity, construction safety has become a very important issue in the construction industry. Training in construction is also on the rise at university level.
The course develops the theme of proper safety management in the design, construction and maintenance phases of the work, with particular attention to occupational safety in its various meanings, including the prevention of accidents and occupational diseases among workers. The course provides students with the skills necessary to identify hazard factors, quantify and manage risks for the analysis and construction of occupational safety.
In particular, safety on construction sites is explored in depth with regard to specific industry regulations and management choices. Specifically, the identification of site-specific risks during work planning and the implementation of appropriate controls to prevent damage to people and property, monitoring work to identify and promptly correct unsafe practices and conditions. The knowledge acquired will be useful in managing the health and safety of workers, in accordance with points 3, 4, 8, 11, 12, 14, and 15 of the 2030 EU Agenda.
Course Structure
Lessons are planned which, starting from the guidelines provided by European and Italian legislation, will lead to the development of skills for identifying hazard factors, quantifying and managing risks for the analysis and construction of safety in the workplace. A design exercise will be proposed to be carried out in working groups.
Required Prerequisites
No prerequisites are required.
Attendance of Lessons
According to the teaching regulation, at least 70% attendance in class is required. Signatures will be collected during lessons.
