Learning Objectives

Providing theoretical and practical knowledge to design and manage the engineering plants for: 1) solid waste treatment and disposal, 2) gaseous effluent treatment, 3) water treatment and reclamation.


Course Structure

Lectures. Discussion on the content of the lectures. Classroom exercises on sizing of reactors for water and waste treatment with the aid of IT tools.


Detailed Course Content

Environmental regulation.

Waste treatment plants. Solid waste management. Waste selection and minimization. Material recovery plants. Energy recovery (thermovalorization). Composting. Landfill design and management.

Gaseous effluent treatment plants.

Water treatment plants. Legislation. Treatment trains and costs. Advanced treatment processes. Control of emerging contaminants. Design of water treatment plants.

Wastewater treatment plants and water reclamation plants. Treatment trains. Preliminary and primary treatments. Secondary biological treatments. Innovative treatment systems (MBR, MBBR, etc.). Alternative disinfection technologies. Removal of emerging contaminants (xenobiotics, endocrine disrupting compounds, etc.) Water reuse and sustainability. Sludge treatment and disposal. Control of processes. Design of wastewater treatment plants and water reclamation plants.
