Learning Objectives

Knowledge of the mathematical tools to study fluid flow in the different contexts in which they are found in nature, with particular reference to their interaction with sediments, aiming to hydraulic works engineering.

Detailed Course Content

The fluvial system. Uniform, steady and unsteady free surface flow. Water-sediment interaction: beginning of motion; computation of bed sediment load and suspended load. Mobile-bed flow resistance. River bed evolution.

Debris and mud flow: development, evolution and characterization; rheology modeling; numerical models.

Water wave mechanics: regular and irregular waves. Wave transformation. Short term and long term analyses for design conditions. Surf zone hydrodynamics. Coastal processes
