TELERILEVAMENTO E GIS

Academic Year 2023/2024 - Teacher: MICHELE MANGIAMELI

Expected Learning Outcomes

The course provides the basic notions on the management of spatial data and the use of GIS technology.Furthermore, the course provides techniques for the interpretation of multispectral, hyperspectral and radar satellite images in order to monitor the territory and produce thematic spatial cartography also using algorithms of classification .

Course Structure

The teaching is delivered through frontal lessons with the support of slides and involves the carrying out of practical, participatory and cooperative exercises, with the use of free and open source software. Where possible and/or necessary, both lessons and exercises may be carried out electronically according to the methods imposed by the University regulations.

Required Prerequisites

Knowledge of the basic topics of Topography and Cartography is required.

Attendance of Lessons

The student is invited to attend the course lessons. Attendance is not compulsory but allows, if acquired for at least 70% of the frontal lessons, to take ongoing tests.

Detailed Course Content

Elements of Geodesy and Cartography. Tools and methods for topographic surveying. Digital cartography. Orthophoto, DTM, DEM, TIN. Structure, functionality and application of Geographic Information Systems. Free and open source GIS Softwares.

Learning Assessment

Learning Assessment Procedures

Ongoing evaluations in written form (not mandatory) and with final evaluation, reserved only for students who have attended at least 70% of the lessons. Oral exam for all ordinary and extraordinary sessions.

The evaluation of the exam will be based on the following elements: relevance of the answers to the questions asked, quality of the contents, ability to connect with other topics covered by the program, ability to formulate examples, ownership of technical language and overall expressive ability of the student.

Examples of frequently asked questions and / or exercises

Raster and vector data - georeferencing of raster images - physical principles of multispectral remote sensing - passive sensors - spectral signature - chorological mapping - satellite images - GIS architecture and functionality - advanced spatial analysis and geoprogessing functionality - E-R diagram constructs - logical DB modeling
