Carola TARDO

Fixed-term Assistant Professor (RTDA) of Building design [CEAR-08/A]

Carola Tardo is fixed-term Assistant Professor of Building Design (ICAR/10) at the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture of the University of Catania. In 2018 she graduated in Building Construction and Architectural Engineering at the same Department (grade of 110/110 cum laude). In 2021 she obtained the title of Ph.D. in "Evaluation and mitigation of urban and land risks" (XXXIV cycle, University of Catania) by discussing a thesis having industrial characterization entitled "Seismic and energy renovation of RC framed buildings with cross-laminated timber panels equipped with innovative friction dampers” in partnership with the Norwegian University of Life Sciences and Adveco S.r.l., by obtaining a honorable mention. The results of her doctoral work have contributed to the main concept of the HORIZON 2020 innovation project called “Energy and Seismic AFfordable renovation solutions – e-SAFE”, whose she is a member of the research group. In 2022 she was Postdoctoral Research Fellow within of the above e-SAFE research project.From march 2023 she carries out research activity within the PNRR project “Sicilian MicronanoTech Research And Innovation Center – SAMOTHRACE” (Work Package 6 “Cultural Heritage”, Task 1 “Diagnostics and materials”).

She is co-owner of the course "Management of safety in construction sites and Lab", Degree Course in Civil, Environmental and Management Engineering at the University of Catania, and member of the examination commission for the exams of the same course. She is inventor of the industrial patent entitled "Dissipative connection device for cross-laminated timber panels" (Italian National patent No. 102019000012402,  19.01.2021). She is co-founder of the company WeDeSt – We Design Studio, spinoff of the University of Catania. The company provides consultancy and design services on innovative interventions for new and existing buildings. She is co-author of scientific publications presented in national and international journals and conference proceedings. She has been speaker at national and international conferences, and she has carried out seminar, collaboration and support activities in teaching and scientific dissemination. She was supervisor and co-supervisor of master degree theses on the topics of buildings renovation and historical architecture.
