SOSTENIBILITA' ENERGETICA E AMBIENTALE DELL COSTRUZIONI
Academic Year 2023/2024 - Teacher: VINCENZO COSTANZOExpected Learning Outcomes
The course intends to convey to students the technical-scientific background necessary for the sustainable design of buildings, with particular reference to materials throughout their life cycle, according to the Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) approach.
Starting from the broader context of Life Cycle Thinking, and relating to the issues of the environmental impact generated by the use of building materials throughout their life cycle (production, use, disposal), the student will acquire the most recent techniques of analysis and evaluation, the regulatory and legislative apparatuses in the field of energy and the environment, the ecological quality labels of materials and products, the possibilities of recovery and reuse of waste materials, the characterization of eco-compatible materials and constructions, as well as the multi-criteria and analytical tools currently available for verifying the environmental quality of products and buildings.
Course Structure
Teaching will take place through lectures and exercises on the topics indicated in the "Programming" tab.
Required Prerequisites
Fundamental Mathematics and Physics; Environmental Technical Physics; Basic knowledge of energy-environmental balances.
Attendance of Lessons
Detailed Course Content
The course takes place with lectures and is divided into the following topics aimed at understanding and evaluating the problem of energy-environmental sustainability of constructions:
• The principles of environmental sustainability
• Raw materials, secondary materials, and production processes of construction materials
• Polluting emissions generated by technological processes and related environmental impacts
• Environmental impact assessment indices
• Environmental profile of the main building materials and products
• Construction materials with low environmental impact: characteristics and fields of use
• Certification and eco-labelling of construction materials and products
• Principles and techniques of environmental analysis of materials: from Embodied Energy to LCA
• Methodological phases of the LCA
• International protocols for the multi-criteria assessment of the environmental quality of buildings (focus on the ITACA and LEED protocols)
• EU Directives, National Legislation and Technical Standards on the sustainability in the construction sector
• Minimum Environmental Criteria (CAM) and Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)
• Examples of LCA evaluation of construction materials and products
• Practice - Environmental analysis of a building or infrastructure chosen by the student
