Course Overview

The Master of Science in Civil, Structural and Geotechnical Engineering, activated in the 2011-2012 academic year, focuses on aspects related to the verification, design, maintenance and management of civil and industrial structures, including the issues related to the foundations and soils. Ample space is dedicated to the study of the behaviour of structures and soils in seismic areas, including the most advanced seismic protection and upgrading techniques. The course focuses on teachings characterising Structural and Geotechnical Civil Engineering, without neglecting kindred disciplines.
The aim of the course is to train experts in the repair and seismic upgrading of buildings, in the design and calculation of earthquake-resistant structures, in the evaluation of the effects of soil-structure interaction and in the realistic mechanical characterisation of materials used in construction, from traditional soils and materials to new materials. Such experts have an essential role in the design, construction and maintenance of all civil and industrial structures, as well as in the design and completion of seismic upgrading of existing buildings, with particular emphasis on strategically important structures. They find employment in the structural design field, in construction companies, in the technical offices of public administrations and in high scientific and professional training institutions.
The Degree programme lasts two years, with learning activities divided into 2 periods per year. At the end of the course, student earn 120 credits (University Training Credits).
The final test consists in the discussion of a dissertation in Italian or English developed under the guidance of one or more advisors; the dissertation may have a theoretical, experimental, design or recapitulative nature.
As part of the Additional Training Activities of the Official Study Plan, students will earn 9 credits from “More training useful to enter the labour market”.
Such credits can be honed through “other activities” offered by the Master’s Degree programmes of the University, through “internal activities”, namely activities organised by the University, such as workshops, study days, seminars, etc.; “external activities”, namely, activities organised by entities outside the University, such as specialisation/in-depth courses, workshops, study days, seminars, etc.; “internal apprenticeships” at University facilities; “external apprenticeships” outside the University, i.e. internships and stages in Italian or foreign companies, businesses, and public or private institutions. In the context of the Additional Training Activities of the Official Study plan, students will earn 9 credits from training useful to enter the labour market.
