Providing theoretical and practical knowledge to design and manage the water treatment and reclamation plants.


Course Structure

Lectures. Open discussion on the content of the lectures. Classroom exercises on sizing of reactors for water treatment with the aid of IT tools.


Detailed Course Content

Presentation of the course. Water quality parameters: chemical-physical and microbiological. Examples. Water intended for human consumption and mineral water legislation. Physico-chemical processes (chemical reactions, reactors, mass transfer). Sedimentation. Filtration. Coaggulation and flocculation. Exercise: design of chemical-physical water treatment units. Adsorption. Aeration and stripping. Redox. Exercise: design of chemical-physical water treatment units. Conventional biological processes. Exercise. Disinfection of water intended for human consumption. Exercise: design of Disinfection Unit . Water treatment plant schemes for human consumption. Removal of specific pollutants (Fe, Mn, Ca, Mg, F, As, V, etc.). Exercise with intermediate test. Case studies on Etnean groundwater treatments. Emerging issues. Corrosion. Bacterial regrowth. Fouling. Control of disinfection by-products (DBP). Case studies and innovative technologies for the control of DBPs. Advanced membrane and desalination processes (thermal and reverse osmosis). Advanced oxidation processes and advanced biological processes. Plant examples. Treatment of waste materials. Plant examples. Exercise: treatment residues management. Adaptation to climate change and resilient plants. Case Study. Reuse of water. Schemes and processes for direct and indirect drinking reuse. Plant examples. Problems, feasibility / sustainability and future prospects of water reuse. Emerging contaminants (CEC) in drinking water. CEC removal and modeling. Process control and CEC monitoring. Case studies and ongoing research on PFAS and other CECs in drinking water.
