Construction Techniques

Academic Year 2023/2024 - Teacher: Nino SPINELLA

Expected Learning Outcomes

Ability to analyze the behavior of structures and understand their calculation models.

In-depth knowledge of Limit State checks of structural elements in reinforced concrete and steel or wood.

Ability to pre-design structures in reinforced concrete and steel or wood: from the design of the resistant system to the detailed dimensioning of the structural membranes.

Course Structure

The topics covered by the course will be illustrated through lectures. Numerical examples and design applications will be carried out in the classroom to show the practical applications of the theoretical topics covered. Learning will be monitored during the course through: (1) the execution of the project of a reinforced concrete structure and (2) the revisions of the assigned project.

If the course is given in a hybrid or remote mode, the necessary changes may be introduced with respect to what was previously stated, in order to comply with the program envisaged and reported in the Syllabus.

Required Prerequisites

Knowledge of the behavior of one-dimensional elements (truss and beam) with elastic behavior: resolution of isostatic and hyperstatic patterns, determination of the forces and analysis of the stress state of a cross section.

Attendance of Lessons

In class. Constant attendance of the course is recommended.

Detailed Course Content

Evolution of check methods: from admissible stresses to limit states.

Behavior models of materials (concrete and steel or wood), of the resistant mechanisms of the structural elements in reinforced concrete and of the load patterns.

Ultimate limit state checks of reinforced concrete elements: traction, compression, simple and compound bending, shear and torsion.

Checks at the service limit state of reinforced concrete structures: stresses, cracking, and deformations.

Design of a reinforced concrete structure.

Learning Assessment

Learning Assessment Procedures

The design of a reinforced concrete structure will be developed during the course. It will be discussed in the final exam. During the exam, numerical exercises related to practical cases are also required.

Check of learning can also be carried out electronically, should the conditions require it

Examples of frequently asked questions and / or exercises

All the topics of the course are asked with the same frequency. The questions can concern theoretical aspects or they can be asked in the form of numerical exercises to be solved. By way of example, the following are some options:

1. Provided the description of a structure, the student must illustrate the modeling and the methods of analysis for the evaluation of the structural response

2. Once a simple structure or a structural element has been assigned, the student will have to determine the load that involves reaching a limit state

3. If a structural problem has been indicated, the student must illustrate the physical phenomenon and / or the theoretical formulation and / or the related regulatory requirements

4. Even during the exam, the student must be able to set up and develop practical applications on the design / check of the structural types analyzed in the course

5. Discussion of the project tables and calculation reports relating to the project drawn up during the course
