DISEGNO DELL'ARCHITETTURA II E LABORATORIO DI DISEGNO DELL'ARCHITETTURA II
Module DISEGNO DELL'ARCHITETTURA II

Academic Year 2026/2027 - Teacher: MARIATERESA GALIZIA

Expected Learning Outcomes

The course aims to provide the methodological and practical tools for interpreting, surveying and representing architecture,

understood in its broadest sense. Through a programme that combines theoretical study with practical exercises, students will acquire the skills necessary to analyse, graphically depict and communicate existing historic architecture.

The knowledge acquired during the course will be applied in the Architectural Drawing Workshop II, which involves the surveying of

historic buildings using both traditional (direct surveying) and digital methods.

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

·     Recognise and understand, through structured surveying, the physical and spatial characteristics of an architectural, urban and environmental context, taking into account both its natural and man-made components. structured surveying, the physical and spatial characteristics of an architectural, urban and environmental context, taking into account both its natural and man-made components.

·       Apply their knowledge and understanding through independent documentary research, using bibliographic and archival sources to situate the work within its historical, socio-economic and territorial context.

 - Manage integrated surveying methodologies, translating metric and geometric data into graphical outputs at the various levels of detail required by the discipline. metric and geometric data into graphical outputs at the various levels of detail required by the discipline.

·       Independent judgement: To develop a thoughtful approach to design and restoration, based on a critical analysis of architecture and its transformations over time, and through the production of technical drawings

Communication skills: students will acquire the ability to convey what they have learnt by drafting technical reports and, whilst working in groups with colleagues and through oral presentations, by critically analysing architecture and its transformations over time and by producing technical drawings

The course content is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda, in particular

Goals: 4. Quality education; 9. Industry, innovation and infrastructure; 11. Sustainable cities and communities; 12. Responsible consumption and production; 15. Life on Land

Course Structure

The course will be delivered through face-to-face teaching. The lessons will be theoretical and will include practical exercises to be carried out in class relating to the topics covered.

Required Prerequisites

Students must have passed the  Disegno dell'architettura 1 e Laboratorio di Disegno dell'architettura examinations.

It is also recommended that students attend the History of Architecture 1 course.

Attendance of Lessons

Attendance of 70% of the course hours is required

Detailed Course Content

Part One: Drawing as a Language and Formal Analysis

The first phase of the course – comprising theoretical lectures and practical exercises – explores the educational value of drawing as a means of expression, composition and communication.

- From idea to design: Analysis of the creative process through sketching and the graphic codes of architecture.

- Descriptive geometry and codification: Study of perspective (central and accidental) and the theory of shadows.

- Morphological and distributional elements: Representation of vertical circulation elements (double-flight staircases and spiral staircases).

- Stylistic language: Study of the architectural order as a tool for interpreting, understanding and graphically rendering the stylistic and formal components of a building.

·- The geometry underlying architecture: geometric matrices, metric and proportional analyses, and harmonic relationships.

Part Two: Surveying as a Tool for Historical and Critical Understanding

The second phase – based on theoretical lectures, seminars and on-site practical sessions – is aimed at gaining an in-depth understanding of the built architectural heritage. Surveying is understood as a tool for revealing the geometric-dimensional, morphological-spatial and stylistic-compositional characteristics of the building, situated within its social, environmental and cultural context. The topics covered include:

Integrated surveying methodologies: Practical learning of direct, instrumental and photogrammetric surveying techniques for the observation and interpretation of the existing built environment.

·        Historical and documentary research: Integration of metric data with bibliographic and archival research, which is essential for identifying the phases of evolution, transformation and change that architecture has undergone over time.

Learning Assessment

Learning Assessment Procedures

The examination is individual and may be taken ONLY after the completion and submission of the ‘ruler and set square’ drawings and the CAD survey project documents. Interim deadlines will be set for the submission of these documents.

The examination consists of an oral interview. During the interview, the student will be asked to solve and/or explain, using appropriate technical terminology and the graphic language of drawing (freehand), certain theoretical or practical aspects relating to the lectures and the drawings produced during the Drawing II course. The interview will also include a discussion of the survey drawings and the theoretical concepts underpinning the practical work carried out during the workshop.

The assessment will take into account the student’s ability to use surveying methods appropriate to the project’s objectives; their proficiency in correctly producing a survey or design drawing to the appropriate scales; and their ability to read and interpret the graphical representation of surfaces in space.

Examples of frequently asked questions and / or exercises

Accidental perspective

UNI standard and codified language

Scales of representation and schematisation

Connecting elements: spiral staircases
