In the same university, he carried out study and research activities during the years 1997-2000 on topics related to stochastic hydrology.
Teaching activities
At the College of Engineering of Catania University he has tought classes in Water Resources Management for the degrees of Civil Engineering and Hydraulic Engineering, and the classes in Hydraulic Infrastructures, Hydrology and Applied Hydrology for the degree of Enviroment and Territory Engineering. He has taught at the Master Course in Water Management and Environment Protection of the Scuola Superiore of Catania. Ha has carried out teaching activities in several national and international post-graduate courses among which the Master of Advanced Studies in Water Resources Management and Engineering organized by the Federal Swiss Institute of Technology (ETH) of Zurich (from 2004 to 2010), where he also held seminars in 2003 and 2005 and the course Drought mitigation methodologies, tools and management options organized by the International Center for Research in Dry Areas (ICARDA), in Aleppo, Siria (2006). Has been invited speaker at the Seminario Internacional de Hidrologia, held in June 2004 in Medellin, Colombia. He is a member of the teaching board of the Ph.D. course in Hydraulic Engineering of Catania University, where he has been and is advisor for several Ph.D. Students.
He has been national coordinator of the project PRIN 2007 "Gestione della siccità e variabilità climatica" (Drought management and climatic variability). He has coordinated the Italian team of the European project “Mediterranean drought preparedness and mitigation planning” MEDROPLAN (Euro-Mediterranean Regional Programme for Local Water Management MEDA) and has been local coordinator of the project “Drought indices forecasting and definition of water supply systems operating rules” (PRIN 2005). He has coordinated the Accompanying Measure MIT-DROUGHT financed by European Commission finalized to the organization of the workshop Expert Consultation and Workshop on Drought Mitigation for the Near East and the Mediterranean held at ICARDA, Aleppo Siria, in cooperation with FAO, Cairo Regional Office and to the publication of the book Tools for drought mitigation in Mediterranean regions published by Kluwer Academic Publishers, of which is co-editor. During the period 2000-2007 has cooperated actively for the coordination of the projects INCO-DC - “A DSS for drought mitigation in Mediterranean regions DSS-DROUGHT (INCO-DC)”, “Water resources management under drought conditions” WAMME (INCO-MED). From 2003 he is local responsible of the European project “Mediterranean drought preparedness and mitigation planning” MEDROPLAN (Euro-Mediterranean Regional Programme for Local Water Management MEDA). Furthermore, he has collaborated to the European projects “Territorial planning and coping with the effects of drougth“ (INTERREG IIc), “Drought and desertification in the Mediterranean basin” SEDEMED e SEDEMEDII (INTERREG IIIb MEDOCC), “Proactive management of water systems to face drought and water scarcity in islands and coastal areas of the mediterranean” PRODIM (INTERREG IIIb ARCHIMED) and to the national project “Drought characterization and water reservoirs management” (PRIN2003). He is a member of the Core Group of the European Drought Center. The scientific activity is documented by more than 150 papers and books, on topics related to the numerical models for the simulation of fluid motion in porous media, to the analysis of water supply systems, to the water resources management, to the analysis of extreme hydrological phenomena, to the stochastic models for hydrological series and to the monitoring of hydrological processes. Cooperates as referee or member of the editorial board with several international journals and has been Associate Editor of the Journal of Hydrology. He is a member of the Core Group of European Drought Center, of the Executive Commettee of the European Water Resources Association. He has been also member of the Board of Directors of the Consorzio Interuniversitario per l'Idrologia (CINID). He has organized several international meetings, among which the Workshop IAHS-STAHY Advances in Statistical Hydrology, Taormina May 23-25 2010, and the VI International Symposium of the 'European Water Resources Association, Catania June 29 -July 2, 2011.
