LORENA SAITTA

Fixed-term Assistant Professor (RTDA) of Materials science and technology [IMAT-01/A]

Lorena Saitta received her Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering (L-9 DM 270/2004) in 2016 at the University of Catania, presenting an experimental thesis entitled: “Nanofiber-based Membranes Loaded with Nanoparticles”, supervised by Prof. Eng. G. Cicala.

Subsequently, in 2019, she received  her Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (LM-33, 2016/2017 regulation), with the final grade of 110/110 cum laude, with an experimental thesis entitled: “Nanostructured Coatings with Antibacterial Properties for Electrospun Materials and Additive Manufacturing”, supervised by Prof. Eng. G. Cicala.

In 2022, she received  a Ph.D. in Energy, Computer and Telecommunications Systems Engineering, in the scientific-disciplinary sector IMAT-01/A – Materials Science and Technology, presenting a dissertation entitled “Functional Additive Manufacturing by using Nanostructured Coatings and Electrospinning”. Her doctoral research included a period at the Polytechnic University of Turin, Department of Applied Science and Technology (DISAT), and was also integrated within the following research projects:

  • PRIN – Projects of Relevant National Interest – Call 2017 – MAMMA (Multiple Advanced Materials Manufactured by Additive technologies);

  • PON Research and Innovation 2014–2020 – THALASSA (Technology And materials for safe Low consumption And low life cycle cost veSSels And crafts);

  • PIACERI Project (University Research Incentive Plan) – MAF-moF (Multifunctional Materials for Micro-optofluidic Devices).

In 2023, as a Postdoctoral Researcher, she carried out the project “Study of Composite Materials for Naval Applications” within the PRIN 2020 Research Project entitled: “Innovative Solutions for Energy-Saving Naval Vehicles – SIMARE” (CUP: G48I18001090007) at the University of Catania.

Between 2023 and 2025, she held the position of Research Fellow within the PRIN 2020 Research Project entitled: “addiTive mAnufactuRing for liGhtwEight joinTs – TARGET” (CUP: E63C20011220001) at the University of Catania.

The scientific activity carried out at the Polymer and Composite Laboratory – DICAr (Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture) of the University of Catania focuses on the following research areas:
