Module LABORATORY OF ARCHITECTURE AND ARCHITECTURAL COMPOSITION III

With a view to completing their degree programme, students will be required to undertake an urban-scale project adopting a multiscalar approach.

Specifically, with regard to the following topics.

Knowledge and Understanding

The course aims to provide students with the knowledge necessary to:

Master every phase of the design process;

Understand the fundamental principles of design as a process of synthesizing form, function, and construction;

Understand the criteria for the configuration, layout, and distribution of spaces in response to human needs;

Understand the typological, morphological, and linguistic characteristics of the architectural structure;

Understand the correlations between the architectural work and its context;

Understand the constructability of the building and the role of technology in the design synthesis.

Ability to Apply Knowledge and Understanding

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

Apply the fundamental principles of design;

Configure and shape buildings by evaluating the functional and distributional characteristics of spaces;

Define the typological, morphological, and linguistic characteristics of the architectural structure;

Adopt the most appropriate construction techniques and procedures.

Independent Judgment

Students will be asked to:

Demonstrate the ability to critically analyze existing building systems from spatial, social, and economic perspectives;

Contextualize design, restoration, management, and organizational interventions according to different design scales;

Develop independent judgment and design skills in the fields of architecture and urban planning at various scales.

Communication Skills

By the end of the course, students will have learned to:

Interact with experts from other fields and technical professionals at various levels;

Communicate effectively within a multidisciplinary team and assume the role of coordinator and manager.

The programme includes theoretical lectures focusing on current monographic topics relevant to the disciplinary debate. Students will contribute to the development of the programme through a series of practical exercises. These will be preceded by specific introductory lectures and by the definition of a methodology for their development. From the outset, students will begin working on a complex urban design project. A multiscalar approach will be required, starting from the masterplan and developing all scales of the project, also through the use of physical models and unconventional forms of representation.

It is essential to have already attended and taken previous years' courses in Architecture and architectural composition I and II, urban planning, history of architecture, technical architecture and drawing.

The course aims to provide students with the tools necessary to understand contemporary disciplinary debates and architectural production. The theoretical content of the programme will be further explored through practical exercises, during which students will engage with real-world contexts and issues. The projects will address complex urban settings characterized by the simultaneous presence of multiple themes, ranging from architecture and landscape to public space and mobility, from infrastructure and cultural facilities to new technologies and sustainability.

The bibliography will be further expanded in class according to the issues that emerge during the discussion of the students’ work.

Throughout the course, students’ learning will be continuously assessed through discussions of the assigned exercises.

At the end of the course, examinations, according to the schedule published on the Department’s website, will consist of the presentation and discussion of the assigned exercises and the final course project. The latter must be adequately represented through drawings at appropriate scales, physical models, and any additional graphic techniques deemed useful for effectively conveying the design ideas.
