DISEGNO DELL'ARCHITETTURA II E LABORATORIO DI DISEGNO DELL'ARCHITETTURA IIModule Laboratory of Architectural Drawing II
Academic Year 2026/2027 - Teacher: MARIATERESA GALIZIAExpected Learning Outcomes
The course offers a solid theoretical and practical grounding in the understanding, documentation and two- and three-dimensional representation of architectural heritage, through the use of advanced digital methodologies and tools.
During the programme, students will acquire advanced skills in integrated surveying. They will learn to apply, critically and knowledgeably, various data acquisition and analysis techniques — including direct, instrumental and photogrammetric surveying — in both architectural and urban contexts.
The aim is to train professionals capable of working effectively in the field, mastering the most appropriate approaches for each context of intervention, from the scale of an individual building to the urban scale. Particular attention will be paid to the accurate graphical representation of historic properties at various scales of representation, whilst fully respecting the morphological, material and chronological characteristics of the built environment.
Course Structure
The lessons will be delivered in a face-to-face format, combining classroom exercises with on-site surveying activities.
During the course, students will work in groups to develop an architectural survey project (direct, instrumental and photogrammetric). The final project, focusing on the survey and the complete graphical representation of an assigned historic building, must be presented during the examination alongside the classroom exercises. The documentation work will also require specific historical and archival research (Land Registry, Municipal Technical Office, State Archives and oral sources) aimed at reconstructing the building’s design history and its original configuration.
Required Prerequisites
Students must have passed the Disegno dell'architettura 1 e Laboratorio di Disegno dell'architettura 1 . examinations.
It is also recommended that students attend the History of Architecture 1 course.

Detailed Course Content
The Laboratorio di Disegno dell’Architettura II explores the topics covered in the Drawing course in greater depth, through practical exercises focused on site surveying. The course will address the topics of digital surveying, the geometry underlying the design and 3D modelling, with the aim of producing a comprehensive graphical record of the site under study.
Students will critically analyse the surveyed architecture using software designed for instrumental and photogrammetric surveying — including topographical surveying, SfM (Structure from Motion) techniques and photogrammetric rectification — to graphically translate the building into interpretative models capable of conveying its physical and material characteristics, as well as its stylistic and formal qualities.
Learning Assessment
Learning Assessment Procedures
The examination is individual and may be taken ONLY after the completion and submission of the ‘ruler and set square’ drawings and the CAD survey project documents. Interim deadlines will be set for the submission of these documents.
The examination consists of an oral interview. During the interview, the student will be asked to solve and/or explain, using appropriate technical terminology and the graphic language of drawing (freehand), certain theoretical or practical concepts relating to the lectures and the drawings produced during the Drawing II course. The interview also involves a discussion of the survey drawings and the theoretical concepts underpinning the practical work carried out during the workshop.
Assessment will take into account the student’s ability to apply surveying methods appropriate to the project’s objectives; their proficiency in correctly producing a survey or design drawing to the appropriate scales; and their ability to read and interpret the graphical representation of surfaces in space.
