Learning Objectives

  • Macromolecular Chemistry

    The aim of the course is to provide the students the knowledge about chemical synthesis of polymer and of structure-property relationship of polymers and composites

  • Materials Science and Technology

    The aim of the course is to introduce material structures, materials structure-property relationship and some of the most important technological process. Metals will be discussed while, polymer and composites will be discussed in more detail in the module Macromolecular Chemistry. Introduction to material recycling methodology will be provided and Life Cycle Analysis techniques will be shortly presented.


Detailed Course Content

  • Macromolecular Chemistry

    Chemistry of Carbon

    Polymer synthesis : PS, PE, PVC, PP, PET, PC, Ny, PES, PEEK, PMMA, Epoxy resin, Polyester resins, Polyurethane, Elastomer

    Physical-Chemical Properties of polymers: Molecular mass and distribution, Glass transition temperature, Melt temperature, Polymeric Solution viscosity, Polymer Rheology.

    Mechanical Properties of polymer and failure phenomena: Stress-Strain curves, Polymer viscoelasticity, Polymer fracture, Creep.

    Composite Materials: Fibres and matrices, Physical and mechanical properties of composites, production properties of composites.

    Polymer recycling: Recycling methods, Sorting technique, Recycling technique (thermomechanical, chemical, incineration), Practical recycling techniques
