PARAMETRIC MODELING AND DIGITAL SURVEY
Module PARAMETRIC MODELING

Academic Year 2026/2027 - Teacher: CETTINA SANTAGATI

Expected Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding

The course provides students with a critical approach to digital tools for the drawing, representation, and communication of architectural design, through the use of digital representation and parametric modelling techniques. More specifically, the course aims to develop knowledge and understanding of the concept of architectural representation and of the main techniques of digital drawing and modelling, including CAD modelling, mathematical modelling, numerical modelling, reverse modelling, and parametric modelling, as well as the BIM approach to design and interventions on the existing built heritage.

Applying Knowledge and Understanding

By the end of the course, students will have acquired an overview of the main 3D modelling techniques, understood the principles, standards, and regulatory frameworks underpinning the BIM approach, and be able to model objects using mathematical modelling techniques, perform reverse modelling operations, define information requirements, and develop models according to the BIM approach.

Communication Skills

By the end of the course, students will have acquired the ability to interact effectively with experts from different disciplinary fields and with technical professionals at different levels of expertise, as well as to communicate and collaborate within interdisciplinary work teams. They will also be able, where required, to take on coordination and management roles in the organization of activities and work processes

The program shares the following Agenda 2030 objectives:

  • SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure: promotes digitalization and modernization of infrastructure.

  • SDG 4 – Quality Education: development of digital skills and new professional profiles.

  • SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth: technological innovation as a driver for new qualified employment.

  • SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities: protection and enhancement of historical, artistic, and cultural heritage

Course Structure

The course consists of theory lessons, envisioned to critically understand the available instruments and the areas of applications, and practical exercises addressed to achieve familiarity with the IT tool. During the course, there will be organized several workshops to deepen some fundamental arguments.

Required Prerequisites

Students are expected to have a basic knowledge of the concepts of architectural representation and computer-aided drawing techniques. These skills are acquired through courses such as Architectural Drawing 1 and 2 and Laboratory, or equivalent courses.

Attendance of Lessons

Attendance is mandatory. The student is required to attend at least 70% of the course lectures.

Detailed Course Content

The course will address the following topics:

 - Computer-based modeling techniques (NURBS, polygonal, solid);

- reverse modeling techniques;

-Parametric and algorithmic modeling through VPL (visual programming language);

- BIM for the design and maintenance of the built heritage

- National and international BIM standards and regulations

In-depth seminars on specific topics will also be organized, inviting experts from the sector.

Textbook Information

Students are advised to use the course materials and to refer to the recommended bibliography, particularly the relevant standards and regulations.

Learning Assessment

Learning Assessment Procedures

Access to the examination is subject to the completion of the assignments carried out during the course.

Learning is assessed through an oral examination, the evaluation of the coursework completed during the course and, where applicable, a practical test.

The oral examination generally consists of three questions covering the topics addressed during the course. The average duration of the oral examination is approximately 20 minutes per module.

The final grade will take into account the relevance and completeness of the answers to the questions asked, the quality of the content, the ability to establish connections between the different topics covered in the syllabus, the ability to provide relevant examples, the command of technical terminology, and the student’s overall communication skills. The quality of the coursework completed during the course will also contribute to the final assessment.

Learning assessment may also be carried out on-line, should the conditions require it.

To ensure equal opportunities and in compliance with current laws, interested students may request a personal interview in order to plan any compensatory and/or dispensatory measures based on educational objectives and specific needs. Students can also contact the CInAP (Centro per l’integrazione Attiva e Partecipata — Servizi per le Disabilità e/o i DSA) referring teacher within their department (https://www.cinap.unict.it/content/referenti).
