CONTROLLI NON DISTRUTTIVI SU ELEMENTI MECCANICI

Academic Year 2026/2027 - Teacher: FABIO RAFFAELE EMILIO AN LO SAVIO

Expected Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and understanding

The course aims to provide the basic knowledge of non-destructive tests to be carried out on mechanical devices or individual parts of them in the construction or operating phase. The presence of discontinuities and defects generated during the foundry, casting, welding processes or during the useful life of the mechanical elements will be analyzed. The student engineer will be instructed on the most significant aspects of non-destructive testing methods ranging from visual inspection to the most refined radioscopic methods. The course also includes laboratory exercises with examples of the use of some of the most common methods.

Applying knowledge and understanding

The skills acquired will be applicable to quality management in organizations in the civil, industrial, and service sectors, in accordance with Goals 9, 11, and 12 of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Course Structure

The course includes 60 hours of lectures led by the instructor, divided into 36 hours of lectures and 24 hours of laboratory exercises. A final paper describing the laboratory activities, including analysis of the collected data and evaluation of errors made during measurements, is required.

Required Prerequisites

The student should possess useful knowledge of metallurgical treatments and metrology.

Attendance of Lessons

Attendance at lectures and exercises must be no less than 70% of the total, as required by the University regulations.

Detailed Course Content

Description of the defects generated during the processing techniques in the furnace, casting, cold or hot plastic processing of metal elements. Description of defects produced during various welding methods, during mechanical processing or during the operation of mechanical elements. Analysis of the following non-destructive test methods for defect detection: Visual investigation, Penetrant liquids, Magnetoscopy, Acoustic emission, Thermography, Eddy currents, Radiography, Ultrasound and Leak detection.

Textbook Information

  1. C. Hellier, Handbook of Nondestructive Evaluation, 3rd Ed. McGraw-Hill Education.
  2. Lecture notes and slides by the teacher.

Learning Assessment

Learning Assessment Procedures

The evaluation during the oral exam will be based on: knowledge of the topics covered, the relevance of the answers to the questions asked, the use of technical language, the ability to make connections between the contents of the program.

Examples of frequently asked questions and / or exercises

  • The candidate describes the modes of propagation of the ultrasonic sound wave.
  • The candidate describes the concept of Inductive Reactance in the Eddy Current method.
  • The candidate describes the Ketos Ring and how it is applied in a test with magnetic particles.
