Best Poster Award at the 19th International Conference on Advanced Computational Engineering and Experimenting (ACEX 2026), Rhodes, Greece, June 29th - July 3rd
to Abdou Kandalaft, a PhD student under the supervision of Professor Luca Placidi, enrolled in the National PhD Program (2023/2024 regulations) in his third and final year.
ACEX is a premier international forum focused on the latest advances in computational engineering, material science, and experimental characterization. It brings together global researchers to discuss innovative numerical methods and experimental techniques for solving complex engineering problems.
Abdou works full-time as a Design Manager in the façade industry and is completing his research without any dedicated funding.
The topic of both the PhD research and the poster is: "Non-Homogeneous Granular Micromechanics-Based Numerical 2D & 3D Simulations for UHP-FRC in Compression, Tension and Three-Point Bending, by Abdou Kandalaft (University of Catania), Luca Placidi (Pegaso Telematic University), Anil Misra (Florida International University), Francesco Fabbrocino (Pegaso Telematic University)

Promotional activities for the 25 PhD programmes in the 42nd cycle.
The initiative focuses on the presentation of the call for applications for the new cycle, PhD research projects, interdisciplinary networks, international opportunities and collaborations with industry and research organisations.
The event aims to highlight the PhD programme as a forum for advanced training, innovation and professional development, but also as a strategic lever for strengthening dialogue between the University, the local community, institutions and businesses. The initiative also aims to support the career guidance of young talents and to raise the profile of research’s contribution to the economic, social and cultural development of the local area.
From 4.00 pm, visitors will be able to explore the exhibition and workshop area dedicated to the University’s PhD students’ projects, organised around the three ERC thematic areas: Physical Sciences and Engineering, Life Sciences, and Social Sciences and Humanities. Through talks, informative materials and practical demonstrations, the PhD students will share their experiences of theoretical training and experimental work, international mobility and collaboration with public bodies, businesses, research centres and healthcare organisations, in line with the objectives of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan and the Europe 2027 Agenda.
